Among the most exclusive creations to emerge from Chevrolet during the muscle car era were those produced through the COPO program. A once obscure practice that has since become the stuff of legends, the Central Office Production Order was employed by Chevrolet executives and select dealers to authorize the fitting of special features or components to factory production vehicles. In addition to their wide use in ordering trucks, buses, taxis and other special-use or fleet vehicles, COPOs were written to cover unique modifications to factory-built Chevrolets, including high-performance drivetrains and, in limited cases, special order paint and interior combinations.
Curiously, only five 1967 Corvettes are known to have been produced with Silver Pearl exterior paint and a Red interior, a combination not available to the general public but only through the COPO program . Special attention was given to the cars and notably, each of the five 1967 Silver/Red Corvettes is one-of-a-kind when it comes to engine configuration. Of that group, this unrestored Bloomington Gold Survivor is one of two using small block power, in this case the base 327/300 HP unit in combination with a Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission and 3.36 Positraction rear end. It is the only 1967 Silver-on-Red 327/300 HP COPO Corvette known to exist.
The car was originally ordered by Alan M. Baldwin, who was the sales manager of Dave Hallman Chevrolet in Hamburg, New York. After 15 months with its first owner, Mr. Walter Brock of Ellicottville, it was purchased by Mr. Samuel Freeman of Clarence, New York, who owned it for the next 30 years and drove it a total of approximately 16,000 miles. In 1998 it was purchased by Mr. Kevin Jensen, who owned it for 12 years, during which time it earned Bloomington Gold Survivor Certification in 2004. In 2006 it was inducted into the Bloomington Gold Special Collection; in 2011 it was awarded NCRS Top Flight honors at the Dallas, Texas NCRS Regional.
This incredibly unique mid-year Corvette is unrestored and, although regularly driven in the early years of its life, remains in truly authentic condition. It retains its original Silver Pearl paint and Red vinyl interior, all original glass, date-coded soft top and the original engine, transmission and rear end. Now showing 36,850 original miles, it is fully documented with complete owner history, the original warranty book with Protect-O-Plate and the original tank sticker complete with NCRS validation. The NCRS judging sheet and Bloomington Gold certificates are also included.
