Notes: | February 1993: IN the February 1993 issue of VetteVues magazine, on page 94 and 95 is an article detailing the restoration of 1953 Corvette #255. From that article: #255 was used by GM as a corporate display car some 39 years later. As time and the car's history would have it, it was decided from the Chevrolet corporate executives that the car ultimately had to be restored for future display and show presentations. The restoration was given to Downer's Grove, Illinois' D&M Corvette Specialists, Ltd. The car was in a tired, neglected shape with the exterior paint scratched, nicked and worn. The gaps and alignments were also poorly out of line as well as the car not in running condition. 10-17-2001: We received an email from Ron Anderson regarding the history of #255. He states: "I collect information on 1953 corvettes and I have info regarding #255 which does not agree with what is listed on your web site. I have a great article from the original Corvette News from the 60's which features an extensive twelve page article on a complete restoration of this car. The article features photo's and a detailed list on every step of the restoration." Ron was kind enough to send us a copy of the article as well as other documentation on '53 Vettes which we thank him for. Based upon the article, #255 did undergo a very detailed restoration by Chevrolet. It was started early in January, 1967, and was completed in April, 1967. A total of 1536 man-hours was logged against the project. 6/17/2001: From the Standard-Speaker Sunday (PA Newspaper): "This car -- the 255th of the 300 Corvettes GM built in 1953--has never been restored and carries original parts. The 59,537 miles on its odometer are all original miles Whitaker said." (Ken Whitaker of TMG Sports Marketing, the on-site manager for the Corvette Heritage Tour). The car was brought to Fairway Motors, along Route 309 in Hazle Township, PA as part of the General Motors Corvette Legends Tour. |
